Overview

The Department of National Emergency Services (NES) is responsible for coordinating emergency preparedness, response, and public safety services in the Republic of Nauru. NES works across government agencies, communities, and international partners to strengthen national resilience to disasters and emergencies.

NES operates under the National Disaster Risk Management Act 2016, which provides the national framework for disaster risk management, emergency coordination, and preparedness planning.

NES brings together several key emergency response and public safety services that work together to protect lives, property, and the environment in Nauru.

 

NES Units

National Emergency Services includes the following Divisions:

  • National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO)
  • National Rescue Fire Services (NRFS)
  • Ambulance Services
  • Lifeguard Services
  • National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS)

These services support preparedness, early warning, emergency response, and recovery across the country.

National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO)

The NDRMO coordinates disaster risk management across the Government of Nauru and supports national preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.

NDRMO works with government agencies, communities, and regional partners to strengthen preparedness for natural hazards and emergencies affecting Nauru.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating national disaster preparedness and response
  • Supporting the National Disaster Risk Management Council (NDRMC)
  • Managing the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) during emergencies
  • Supporting community disaster preparedness initiatives
  • Promoting disaster risk reduction and resilience planning
  • Coordinating international disaster assistance when required

Nauru Rescue Fire Services

The Nauru Fire Rescue Services (NRFS) provide fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency response support across the island.

Firefighters protect communities, homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure from fire and related hazards.
