2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games 1

Glasgow, Scotland

Friday, 25 July 2014 - Saturday 26 July:

Nauru is yet to keep its record and hold on to its reputation of being the only Pacific country to claim a medal at every Commonwealth Games.

Weightlifter Elson Brechtefeld and boxers Mathew Martin and Joseph Deireragea were the first Nauru athletes to compete at the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Twenty-year old weightlifter Elson Brechtefeld competed in the 62kg category on the morning of Friday 25 July, finishing in 5th place in the B group.

For a lifter still in his junior years, Elson snatched 105kg and clean & jerk lift of 141kg. He missed two snatch lifts and one clean & jerk lift.

Elson said he is happy with his performance but believes he could have done better adding this is his first time to lift 141 kilograms in the clean & jerk at an international event in the 62kg weight division.

His successful clean & jerk lift of 141kg set a new Oceania junior record previously set by David Sarkisian of Australia.

Elson is vying for the next Commonwealth Games and aims to improve and win a medal.

The men's 62kg clean & jerk and total records of 167kg and 292 kg respectively are held by Marcus Stephen. They were set at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Later in the afternoon (Friday 25 July) boxers Mathew Martin and Joseph Deireragea fought in the preliminary rounds.

Mathew fought Michael Conlan of Northern Ireland in the men's bantam weight 56kg division. Mathew fought well but lost 13 points out of 30 in the three rounds, eliminating him from competition.

Following him was Joseph Deireragea in the 69kg welter weight division.

Being the more experienced of the Nauru boxers Joseph fought fast and aggressive but also losing three points in each of the three rounds to his opponent Ghanaian Azumah

Mohammed, eliminating him from competition.

This is Joseph's second Commonwealth Games.

On Saturday 26 July, 19 year old weightlifter Chris Akaraba Rangidimi unfortunately failed to register a snatch lift subsequently eliminating him for the competition. He lifted in the 69kg weightlifting category.

Chris was understandably disappointed with his performance saying the weight he attempted in the snatch of 93kg was easy enough to lift. Today's lifting ended with a very different result to what he had expected.

Nauru athletes yet to compete today, Sunday 27 July, are Tom Jaye Waibeiya, weightlifting; Alfonse Deireragea, boxing; Joshua Jeremiah and Lovelite Detenamo, athletics; and on Thursday 31 July the 2010 Delhi silver medallist super heavy weight lifter Itte Detenamo.
