Statement from the Government of the Republic of Nauru
The
Government of the Republic of Nauru wishes to correct continued
comments by lawyers and activists in the Australian media, which
are sensational, inaccurate and bordering on the absurd.
Nauru
is not in "chaos", there are no constitutional issues and the rule
of law is operating and respected. Those making claims to the
contrary are pushing their own agendas and should not be taken
seriously.
These
irresponsible reports damage Nauru's reputation and display a
culture of international bullying, arrogance and even racism.
Furthermore, some who are critical of our decision to replace key
legal appointments have direct links to these people and - by their
own admission - are advising them. This is exactly the sort of
cronyism that the Nauru Government is stamping out.
The
democratically elected government is in control and calmly going
about the business of governing in a manner that is best for the
people of Nauru. We are a reformist government with a mandate to
put an end to corruption and cronyism.
Yesterday
(Tuesday 28 January), the Nauru Opposition moved a no-confidence
motion which was defeated on the floor of parliament by a
resounding majority of 11 votes to 7. The Government enjoys the
support of the Nauruan people and no attempted interference by
Australian lawyers and activists will divert us from our goal of
advancing Nauru through accountable, transparent and honest
government.
