Nauruans must send the Opposition a firm message before they drag country down further

The Government of Nauru has called on its people to send a message to Opposition MPs who continue to destabilise the country, and tell them such actions will no longer be tolerated.

The Australian ABC program '7:30' last night aired outdated, baseless and false claims against the President and Justice Minister, based solely on interviews with Nauru MPs Roland Kun and Sprent Dabwido, and disgruntled former government employees associated with the Opposition.

Mr Kun continued to spread lies about Nauru's recent amendment to the criminal code, and both he and Mr Dabwido - who was seen in the report with former Nauru media manager Rod Henshaw - continued to repeat old and disproved claims of payments by phosphate company Getax in 2009 to members of the then opposition.

Justice Minister David Adeang said it was clear to all Nauruans that these MPs were willing to "drag the nation through the mud" just to further their political ambitions, but predicted it would backfire.

"Nauruans are enjoying a new level of prosperity and a Government that is achieving great progress without the corruption of the former governments that the current Opposition MPs were a part of.

"In my lifetime I have never seen elected representatives behave in this almost treasonous manner."

Mr Adeang said the coordination between the Opposition and former government employees including the sacked magistrate and chief justice proved it was "getting the old gang back together, so they could once again reap the personal rewards of power at the expense of the Nauruan people."

However even he was shocked at the level the Opposition was willing to stoop to, following the airing of allegations about his wife, who tragically passed away following an accident.

"That these people would fabricate a story about such a personal and traumatic time for my family, and share this with Australian media for the sole purpose of bringing down our Government, shows how morally bankrupt these people are.

The minister said he would work hard to rebuild any international damage done by the Opposition and called on Nauruans to ensure these MPs are never again elected to parliament.
