Nauru receives grant assistance from Japan

The Government of Nauru has received a grant assistance of JP¥100-million (approx. AUD$1-million) from the Government of Japan for fuel procurement in respect of promoting economic structural adjustment efforts.

The funding will be sourced from Japan's Non-Project Grant Aid (NPGA) program and this year marks the seventh successive year of Japan's funding through the NPGA.

His Excellency President Sprent Dabwido and Japan's Ambassador to Nauru Mr Yutaka Yoshizawa formalized Japan's commitment towards the assistance in a ceremony last week (3 Feb) at the Ambassador's residence in Suva Fiji.

The Government of Japan has provided diesel fuel to Nauru under the NPGA since 2005 where they have given $100-million Yen (approximately AUD$1-million) each year with the exception of 2008 when $200-million Yen (approximately AUD$2-million) was given as aid in kind.

This funding will relieve budgetary pressure on fuel hence, enabling the implementation of Nauru's major sector reform programs in education, health and capital works for poverty alleviation purposes.

The NPGA is an added milestone in Japan's ongoing support and cooperation towards development and prosperity of Pacific Island countries including Nauru and it is anticipated that the friendly ties between the Governments and people of Nauru and Japan will further strengthen.

Other aid projects which the Japanese Government has funded are the provision of solar water pumps, tanks and accessories for brackish water wells in the communities, communal portable water tanks, water delivery trucks and renovation of the fire station.

Since 2006 Japan has provided nine water projects to Nauru through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) program intended to support Nauru's community water supply.
