Nauru parliament stands
dissolved, June elections to follow
The 20th Parliament of Nauru met for the last time
this afternoon (23 May) before it will be dissolved.
The bells were rung shortly before 5.00pm (Nauru time) and
Speaker Godfrey Thoma announced there were insufficient members
present to proceed.
Before adjourning the House sine die, or indefinitely, Mr Thoma
gave a brief statement advising that today's sitting would be the
last for the 20th Parliament. He thanked the parliament
staff for the support they have given over the past weeks and
advised of the impending general elections.
Speaker Thoma then gave a brief overview of past events
beginning from 15th April which included the resignation
of former speaker Ludwig Scotty, Mr Thoma's own appointment as
speaker and dates when there was no quorum as well as when an
attempt was made by a member to move a motion under Article 24 of
the Constitution. Article 24 provides that members move a No
Confidence motion in the president and cabinet.
General parliamentary elections are expected to take place on 22
June.
The members in attendance at today's (23 May) sitting were
Acting President Roland Kun, Dr Kieren Keke, Dominic Tabuna, Landon
Deireragea and Mathew Batsiua.
