Nauru Government calls New Zealand talks healthy
The President of Nauru Baron Waqa
has met with New Zealand's Foreign Minister Murray McCully ahead of
today's formal round-table discussions at the Pacific Foreign
Minister's Forum in Sydney, labelling the talks as "healthy".
The pair discussed recent events in
Nauru yesterday and again this morning in an informal setting, with
President Waqa describing the dialogue as "open, transparent and
honest with both agreeing to continue official talks today".
He said he believed he was able to
ease concerns about unfounded claims of unrest and internal trouble
on the island nation.
"It is clear that New Zealand is
not happy with the detaining of Roland Kun who is unable to leave
Nauru and travel to New Zealand to be with his family."
"We understand his concern, however I assured Mr McCully that Mr
Kun and three other Opposition MPs will have their time in court
and be offered a fair trial after their arrest over last month's
Parliament riot."
Mr Waqa said it was important to
clear the air and inform the Minister of the inaccuracy of media
reports suggesting a breakdown of democracy in Nauru.
"I believe Minister McCully
appreciated the dialogue and we agreed that any ongoing legal
proceedings are a matter for the Nauru Government and its
people."
The President also reiterated that
his Government was given a mandate for reform at the last election,
and has acted in accordance with the will of the people.
"Sadly much of the media reporting
ignores the fact that our legal system is more accountable and
independent today, due to our recent reforms, than at any time in
our history."
Official talks between the ministers begin this afternoon.
