Nauru considers options to combat Neptune Shipping unfair freight costs
The Republic of Nauru is
considering restarting its own shipping venture in response to an
'outrageous' display of greed shown by a New Zealand-based shipping
line.
Since the recent withdrawal of Matson as a shipping supplier to
Nauru, Neptune Pacific has become the sole transporter of freight
from Fiji to the island and has wasted little time in taking
advantage of the monopoly.
Maritime Affairs Minister Valdon Dowiyogo says freight costs are
out of control and this adversely affects prices for
consumers.
"The Nauruan Government has not been sitting idle on this matter
and has made numerous complaints to the shipping company but sadly
all correspondence so far has fallen on deaf ears."
Minister Dowiyogo has also been advised that all key stakeholders
involved will discuss the issue so the shipping companies can
openly explain to Government the reasons for any adjusting of
freight or other charges.
The Minister says negotiations with Neptune will continue but is
now considering options on restarting its own shipping venture to
address the unfair imbalance and ensure Nauruans are not ripped off
by blatant price gouging.
