Nauru-Australia talks result in temporary resettlement of refugees

The Government has thanked Australia for its strong support following talks in Canberra to oversee the processing and resettlement of refugees at the Nauru Offshore Processing Centre.

Minister for Justice David Adeang said substantial ground was made and the two countries would work together more closely to ensure that asylum seekers in Nauru were processed as quickly as possible.

"Those who are given refugee status will be temporarily resettled in Nauru and will be free to live as part of our community," he explained.

Agreement was reached to process a minimum of 60 asylum seeker claims within the next month, with ongoing processing every month.

Mr Adeang said while the Australian Government will assist in the relocation process, it was up to the Nauruan community to provide the welcome.

"We are a friendly people and I know all Nauruans will welcome them as our guests and friends, and help them integrate as quickly as possible."

Refugees will live in Nauru before being permanently settled in a third-part country. Australia is currently in discussions with Cambodia regarding this, and has committed to include Nauru in future talks.

The minister believes the resettlement will boost the local economy.

"These new refugees will support local businesses and become a part of the community."

The two ministers also discussed other aspects of the Offshore Processing Centre and confirmed that a range of health services were available to transferees and that essential items for the care and welfare of infants have been procured and delivered.

"We want to ensure that we deal with all people in a spirit of compassion, while delivering the best outcomes for Nauru.

"The increased temporary resettlement of refugees will be good for Nauru and the Government will continue to work with Australia to ensure Nauru's interests are always promoted, Mr Adeang said.
