High Commission reports Nauruan students are safe from Fiji floods
Nauru's High Commission in Suva Fiji has reported that Nauruan
students studying and residing in the flooded western region of
Fiji are safe and well looked after.
First Secretary Masau Detudamo has reported to his head office
in Nauru, the Department of Foreign Affairs that while the west is
experiencing heavy flooding and rain, the Lautoka area where the
students are is not as badly affected.
"Nadi town is completely flooded, as well as Ba town but
fortunately Lautoka is not as badly affected.
"In respect to our students, all are based in Lautoka and
currently staying at their respective schools. The schools remain
closed until further notice as students from surrounding areas have
been affected by the floods and not able to attend school.
"We have an officer in the west monitoring the situation,
providing assistance to our students and regular updates to the
Mission.
"Students in Natabua and Ba Provincial are well and meals have
been provided by the schools, as for Jasper the Mission is
currently arranging funds for their meals as the school is unable
to at this time," Mr Detudamo said.
It has been reported that roads from Nadi to Lautoka including
roads from Ba into Lautoka are closed due to the flooding. Further
rain is expected over the next ten days.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is working closely with the
High Commission on the safety and well-being of Nauruans in the
affected areas.
