Government takes community safety seriously
The Government of Nauru takes very
seriously the safety of its community and has made inquiries with
Police, into the alleged incident involving a refugee.
It is important to remember that
refugees on Nauru live freely within our community and as such are
exposed to the same community issues as all other residents. These
issues are the same for any community across the globe.
Nauru is a safe and peaceful
country and the Nauruan people, a caring and giving people. Judge
not our people on allegations of the actions of an unknown
individual.
That said, many allegations in the
past have been made by groups with political agendas which have
aimed to derail the homogenous coexistence of both the local and
refugee communities in Nauru.
However as part of the Governments'
continued commitment to community safety, 136 local community
liaison officers (CLO) were earlier employed and they support the
Nauru Police Force. This number is expected to increase with the
inclusion of refugee liaison officers.
Any suggestion that there is
community violence directed at refugees has no basis and is far
from the truth.
The Nauru Police Force will
continue to protect all residents equally, without fear or favour
and will likewise prosecute any person found to have broken the
law, regardless of who they are. The law applies equally to
all.
