Godfrey Thoma elected new
Speaker of the Nauru Parliament
Honourable Godfrey Thoma has been elected as the new Speaker of
the Nauru Parliament at this morning's (Thursday, 25th
April) parliamentary sitting.
Parliament sat shortly after 10.00am today and the first order
of the day was to nominate a Speaker. Two nominations were put
forward and Mr Thoma won the ballot, ten votes to eight against
Baron Waqa.
Shortly after taking the Chair, Mr Thoma adjourned the House
until the "ringing of the bells" however he gave a clear indication
that it would be 10.00am tomorrow (Friday, 26th
April).
Mr Thoma is the second-longest serving member after Ludwig
Scotty.
The election of the speaker comes after the resignation last
week (Thursday, 18 April) of former Speaker Ludwig Scotty.
