COVID-19: Update by President Lionel Aingimea - Monday 18 July 2022

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

by

His Excellency President Lionel Aingimea, MP

Monday, 18 July 2022

In today's update, the accumulative statistics as at the weekend of 16 and 17 July, are as follows:

-             12 new cases

-             586 active cases

-             150 tests during the weekend

-             15,758 tests done this outbreak

-             3,998 cases recovered

-             2 cases admitted to the hospital Acute Care Unit with mild or showing no COVID symptoms but have underlying illness. They will be discharged later today.

-             1 death (accumulative)

-             0 critical cases

-             0 ventilation

-             2 occupants at the Menen quarantine (incoming passengers from Sunday 17 July flight). They will undergo the full 13 days isolation period

-             32 houses in lockdown with 752 residents.

Test results over the weekend equate to three per cent or approximately one in 35 results being positive. Overall tests collected this outbreak is now at 29 per cent.

If you test positive you must isolate at home for at least 13 days (10 days for essential workers) and follow protocols for ending isolation.

Please practice hand hygiene and keep your distance of 1.5-2 meters. If you leave your homes for essential reasons please wear a mask.

A total of 251 children aged five to 11 received their first dose over the weekend, taking the total to 1,779. Children in this age group have now reached 70 per cent of vaccination coverage.

There are a number of children in home isolation and have not been tested but parents and guardians are encouraged to bring children who are able to get vaccinated sooner rather than later. With the current soft lockdown in place, Public Health teams will set up vaccination stations for this age group within districts and will conduct house to house vaccination visits.

Parents and guardians are advised that if your child has COVID, it is better to wait three months from the time of infection to get their first dose. This will help the body increase immunity. Waiting three months is beneficial in terms of building stronger immunity.

However, there is no harm if you want your child to take the shot after recovering from COVID as long as they have no acute illness.

Maintain Health & Safety Always!

•            When you leave home wear a face mask, physical distance, hand wash with soap and sanitise.

•            If you have symptoms, get tested. Stay at Home and do not go to work, school, etc until tested.

•            If you are a close contact, isolate at home for two days, and get tested every two days for six days

•            If you test positive, you must strictly isolate at home for at least 13 days (10 days for Essential Workers) and follow protocols for ending isolation

•            Keep up to date with your COVID vaccination

•            All venues need to put in place systems to maintain distancing and prevent crowding. Undertake frequent cleaning and disinfection. Maintain good ventilation where possible. Consider the use of air purifiers in enclosed spaces.
