CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

by

His Excellency President Lionel Aingimea

Wednesday, 22 April, 2020

President Lionel Aingimea reiterated in a media briefing, Wednesday, 22 April that Nauru remains coronavirus free but urges Nauruans to remain cautious and mindful of rules put in place to ensure the 'capture & contain' policy is taken seriously.

The President firmly reiterated the health implications of irresponsible and thoughtless actions of security breaches, and further stressed that the fines imposed are firm and anyone in breach of these rules and regulations will face the charges.

Recent perimeter breaches at the Budapest and Menen hotel quarantine sites resulted in placing in quarantine a number of visitors deemed to have been in close proximity to those inside quarantine. This led to ten private homes and six nurses also placed in isolation as a result.

Measures have been taken to intensify security presence at all quarantine sites, including at the homes under isolation. Overall security is now overseen by the Nauru Police Force.

The President made it clear that by placing security at the private homes is to ensure all safety and security precautions are taken and are in line with Nauru's capture and contain policy.

Police will continue road blitzes to reduce drink driving incidences that would otherwise add stress to medical staff and hospital resources.

Residents in the government designated quarantine residences are well and continue to have their health monitored daily by on-site health officials.

President Aingimea expressed his thanks to service provider Canstruct for their contribution and assistance in providing meals at no charge for the residents as a matter of community service by the Australian company.

Arrangements for the second student charter flight out of Fiji is being finalised with the Fiji Government.

The Department of Education is tasked with selecting the student passenger list and while students without guardians may be prioritised for obvious reasons, President Lionel Aingimea said "whatever decisions the education department makes, they will be sure it is for the benefit of the child who comes here and is also for the benefit of the child that stays in Fiji [until the next charter flight]."

Lab technicians are trialling and calibrating the machine for on-island testing for coronavirus, which President Lionel Aingimea says will significantly reduce the time spent in quarantine, if a person returns a negative test result.
