Speaker appoints 9 July for general elections

On 11 June 2016 the Speaker of Parliament Hon Ludwig Scotty issued the writ to the electoral commissioner calling for general elections to be held on 9 July 2016.
 
The Twenty-first parliament stands dissolved at midnight on10 June at the completion of its three year term led by President Baron Waqa.
 
The polling day for the general election is Saturday 09th July, 2016. Polling will open at 9:00am and close at 6:00pm.
 
The nomination day for the general election is Saturday 25th June, 2016.
 
Candidates may be nominated from 9:00am Sunday 19th June, 2016 until 5:00pm on Saturday 25th June, 2016.
 
In accordance with section 58 of the Electoral Act, 2016, a person who has been nominated as a candidate may withdraw by notice in writing given to the Electoral Commissioner no later than 12:00 midday on Friday 01st July, 2016.
 
The roll will be closed for the general election on Saturday 18th June, 2016 at 5:00pm.
 
Nominations will be received at the Electoral Commission Office, Civic Centre, Aiwo District.
 
As announced in the last parliament sitting on 10 June, the candidate nomination fee has been amended to $500.
